If I file exempt on my taxes, can I still expect a tax return if I am working?

I am currently a full time employee and I make a little over 40,000 yearly. I am also a student in a university and I wanted to know if I filed exempt on my taxes (because of me being a student) can I still be eligible for a tax refund?
